Not only sustainable food packaging. GoPack’s corporate sustainability initiatives also focus on protecting the ecosystem. For this reason, we have decided to support OlivaMi Ets to promote the reforestation in the Salento area, adopting 55 olive trees, in response to the devastation brought by Xylella.
Xylella Fastidiosa, commonly known as Xylella, is a bacterium that spreads in the lymph vessels of olive trees: the vessels responsible for the supply of water and mineral salts, and that causes the rapid and progressive desiccation of the tree, leading to its death. In the last 5 years it has destroyed more than 21 million olive trees in Salento, erasing years and years of sacrifices of thousands of local farmers. All this has resulted in a 80% reduction of salentino oil, leading to a decrease in national production of 50%. For 5 years now, the national production of olive oil is not able to meet the demand, and Italy, from a large producer country, has become an importer of olive oil.
We at GoPack have always believed that food culture is the heart of the community and a heritage to be preserved. Supporting Salento means protecting the resources that nourish not only the body, but also traditions, strengthening the ties that unite us.
We have decided to take part in this project for:
Supporting local farmers
More than 5,000 olive growers have lost everything due to Xylella: fields, work and traditions. It had a psychologically devastating impact, especially on those families whose only livelihood was olive groves.
Reduce the environmental impact
In Salento, the pollution rate has increased by 8% over the last 5 years.
The olive tree is one of the plants with the highest capacity to subtract CO2 from the atmosphere: every hectare of olive trees removes 9.5 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere each year. That is about 730 kg of CO2 per year for each olive tree.
The adoption of salento olive trees by GoPack reflects the commitment of the company to preserve the cultural and natural heritage of Puglia, to defend the ecosystem from the threat of Xylella and to reduce the impact of pollution. For a healthier, prosperous and sustainable future.
